Finding the perfect target for a red blend is fun -as a winemaker you can choose the varietals in any combination you see works the best. In Washington state and at McKinley Springs Vineyard, we have many great red varieties that grow well and make great wines. The three we enjoyed for this particular blend are Syrah (55%) Cabernet Sauvignon (35%) and Merlot (10%).The Syrah provides a base of rich, jammy fruit that gives the wine a ballast of texture and softness at the same time. The Cabernet Sauvignon gives the structure and depth it is classically known for. The Merlot adds spice and a slightly high toned fruit quality that is a wonderful accent and puts it all together. This is an “everyday” wine that will still stand up to a Saturday night dinner with friends as well. Wine should be fun like the winemaking!
